Pediatric speech therapy can help children from toddlers to school-aged kids, overcome speech and language difficulties.
BUFORD KIDS’ SPOT THERAPIES
Speech therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders from birth to adulthood. A Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) provides speech therapy services based on the results of a comprehensive evaluation. SLP’s work with clients whose disorders develop in childhood or an acquired speech impairment caused by injury or illness.
Speech therapy consists of techniques and activities aimed at improving overall communication by addressing speech delays and disorders in expressive/receptive language, articulation, oral motor dysfunction, apraxia of speech, social language, fluency (stuttering), feeding and swallowing, and cognitive skills.
SLP’s work collaboratively with other professionals from other disciplines and caregivers to ensure that clients receive the best possible care.
Stuttering is a form of disfluency.
Both understanding and use of language, including the social aspects of language, are referred to as pragmatics.
This includes emergent literacy skills, phonemic awareness and related literacy skills to address reading and writing disorders.
Speech therapy can help with voice disorders, resonance, vocal quality, and vocal hygiene.
Exercises for your swallowing muscles train muscles to work together to help improve swallowing.
SLP’s provide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems for individuals with severe expressive and/or language comprehension disorders.
We help with Cognitive-communication disorders that involve attention, memory, planning, organizing and problem-solving.
Articulation is the production of individual speech sounds. Speech sound disorders impact overall intelligibility. Disorders of articulation, phonology and Apraxia are types of Speech Sound Disorders.
SLP’s also work with individuals who wish to enhance or modify communication when a communication or swallowing disorder does not exist, such as Accent Modification.
Why Would My Child Need Speech Therapy?
Speech therapy helps children improve communication, vocal quality, and social skills, enhancing their ability to express themselves and interact with others. It prepares them for school, aids in literacy, and teaches alternative communication methods, such as sign language or communication devices. By addressing both speech and language, speech therapy reduces frustration and boosts self-esteem, allowing children to better connect with their peers and adults.
Therapist 1: The thing that I love most about speech therapy is helping my clients grow and become independent in their ability to communicate. I love collaborating with families and other professionals to find the best possible solutions for each client and watch as the client gains confidence in their communicative abilities. It’s wonderful to work with a variety of people, build relationships, and laugh daily. This field is amazing because it provides the opportunity to build relationships with clients, caregivers, and other professionals and it pushes me to grow my clinical skills and be the best clinician possible.
Therapist 2: I love meeting and getting to know each individual that is on my caseload. I enjoy collaborating with both families and other disciplines for optimum usage carryover of strategies. I chose this field because I am passionate about helping and providing care to young individuals (and their families) so that they are better able to communicate with their caregivers and peers in a variety of settings
